George Steiner

(1929 - 2020)

Born in Paris in 1929 to émigré parents and naturalized as a U.S. citizen in 1944, George Steiner received his BA from the University of Chicago in 1948, his MA from Harvard University in 1950, and his PhD from Oxford University in 1955. He published Tolstoy or Dostoevsky in 1959, After Babel: Aspects of Language and Translation in 1975, and the novel The Portage to San Cristóbal of A.H. in 1981. Asked if he ever read anything frivolous when young, Steiner replied, “Moby Dick.”
