Madame Roland

(1754 - 1793)

The daughter of a Parisian engraver, Jeanne-Marie Roland was born in 1754. She was arrested during the Reign of Terror and wrote her memoirs during the five months she was imprisoned. Before being guillotined at the age of thirty-nine, she cried, “O Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name!”
