John Paul Stevens

Born in Chicago, John Paul Stevens won a Bronze Star while serving in the navy in World War II before attending Northwestern for his law degree. Richard Nixon appointed him to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, where he served for five years before Gerald Ford nominated him for a Supreme Court seat. Stevens was the third-longest serving justice in Supreme Court history at the time of his retirement in 2010; he was replaced by Elena Kagan. The judge, who had seen Babe Ruth play in the 1930s, said of the Chicago Cubs shortly before they won their first World Series in more than a century, “Well, you have to be patient. Patience is certainly a virtue.”
