Mark Helprin

Graduating from Harvard University in 1969, Mark Helprin at the age of twenty-two published his story “Because of the Waters of the Flood” in The New Yorker. He published A Dove of the East and Other Stories in 1975, Refiner’s Fire in 1977, and A Soldier of the Great War in 1991. When asked why he does not like to give readings, Helprin replied, “I think it’s more or less dishonorable to stand up in front of a few hundred people and read from a book.”
