Her affair with the theologian Peter Abélard having come to an untimely and unhappy end, Héloïse entered a nunnery in 1118. She had given birth to Abélard’s son, Astrolabe, but she rejected Abélard’s proposal of marriage: “Sweeter for me will always be the word ‘mistress,’ or, if you will permit me, that of ‘concubine’ or ‘whore.’”
