Fukuzawa Yukichi

(1835 - 1901)

In his book Things Western, reformer Fukuzawa Yukichi introduced the Western concept of public libraries to Japanese readers. The government-sponsored Tokyo Library opened in 1872; it became so popular that administrators set rules limiting the reading of novels in favor of more serious scholarship. Today, his image appears on the front of the 10,000-yen note.
