John Barth

After writing The Floating Opera and The End of the Road, John Barth published in 1960 an 800-page satirical novel set in colonial Maryland, The Sot-Weed Factor. Known for the complex plotting and philosophical depth of his novels, Barth also taught creative writing at his alma mater, Johns Hopkins University, for more than twenty years until his retirement in 1995.
