Thomas Adeoye Lambo

(1923 - 2004)

One of more than thirty children born to a Yoruba chief with twelve wives, Thomas Adeoye Lambo studied medicine and psychiatry in England before returning to Nigeria in 1950. From 1973 to 1988 Lambo served as deputy director general of the World Health Organization. Upon his death, one obituary called him “the recognizable face of African psychiatry.”
