William Wellington Gqoba

(1840 - 1888)

William Wellington Gqoba was born several decades after British missionaries first settled among his Xhosa-speaking Bantu clan in South Africa. He was a student and then a teacher at the Lovedale Missionary Institution, and—although he trained as a wagonmaker—later became a translator and poet while editing the newspaper the Xhosa Messenger.
