Aiping Mu
Born to high-ranking intellectuals in the Chinese Communist Party, Aiping Mu was recruited as a Red Guard shortly after the start of the Cultural Revolution; the resulting upheaval led to her parents’ imprisonment and her exile to a camp for delinquents. She later became an opera singer and army doctor before leaving China in 1988 to attend college in England. In 2000 she published the memoir Vermilion Gate.
