Folk remedies for the hiccups from around the world.

  • English: Spit on forefinger of right hand and make a cross on the front of left shoe while saying the Lord’s Prayer backward.
  • Norwegian: Swallow a spoonful of white sugar, allowing the melting granules to trickle down the back of throat.
  • Greek: Apply mixture of honey, powdered coriander, and pepper to tongue for one minute.
  • Roman: Hold left thumb in right hand.
  • American: Bend over and drink water from opposite edge of glass.
  • Viking: Grasp tongue in a clean handkerchief and pull it forward, slowly and silently counting from one to one hundred.
  • Chinese: Rub roof of mouth with cotton swab at the point where hard and soft palate join.
  • Spanish: Sprinkle quarter-teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder into a half-cup of vinegar, add flour, and apply paste to diaphragm.
  • Slavic: Rub a mixture of vinegar and mustard on your tongue, hold for two minutes, and rinse.
  • Swedish: Hold breath, pinch thumbs and pinky fingers together, and move arms around in circles.
