John Stands in Timber

(1884 - 1967)

Orphaned at the age of eight, John Stands in Timber became tribal chairman of the Northern Cheyenne in the 1940s and later helped found the American Indian Historical Society. When Margot Liberty, a schoolteacher on the reservation, began recording his life story in 1958, he was living in a two-room cabin without heat or modern plumbing.
