Rachel de Queiroz

(1910 - 2003)

Rachel de Queiroz wrote her first novel, The Fifteen, when she was twenty; it was an unexpected success in her native Brazil. She continued to write novels and spent much of the latter half of her career filing crônicas to Brazilian newspapers. In 1977, De Queiroz became the first woman admitted to the Brazilian Academy of Letters.
