Matthew Paris

(c. 1200 - 1259)

The English Benedictine monk and chronicler Matthew Paris, based at St. Albans Abbey in Hertfordshire, is mostly known for his chronicles of the history of England, which he wrote and rewrote and revised over the course of his lifetime while also finding time to add colorful illustrations of kings, maps, elephants, and himself.
