John Dramani Mahama

John Dramani Mahama served as vice president of Ghana from 2009 to 2012 and became president in 2012, after the death of John Evans Atta Mills. Elected to serve a full term in 2012, he is the only president in Ghanaian history not to win a second term. In his autobiography My First Coup d’État: Memories from the Lost Decades of Africa, he recollects what it was like to watch the military overthrow the government of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, in 1966, when he was a child.
