Jan Ellen Lewis was a professor of history at Rutgers University, Newark. Her books include The Pursuit of Happiness: Family and Values in Jefferson’s Virginia and Family, Slavery, and Love in the Early American Republic: The Essays of Jan Ellen Lewis.
