Kazuo Ishiguro

Born in Nagasaki to a mother who had survived the atomic bombing of the city nine years earlier, Kazuo Ishiguro was raised in Guildford, England. He published his most celebrated work, The Remains of the Day, in 1989. “There are large glamorous industries around stories: the book industry, the movie industry, the television industry, the theater industry,” he said in his Nobel lecture in 2017. “But in the end, stories are about one person saying to another: This is the way it feels to me. Can you understand what I’m saying? Does it also feel this way to you?”
