Lewis Hyde

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the poet, essayist, and scholar Lewis Hyde is the author of four wide-ranging books of cultural theory, including The Gift and Trickster Makes This World. His latest work, A Primer for Forgetting, takes the form of a “prose collage.” Explaining his decision to compile the material episodically, he writes, “I found myself weary of argument, tired of striving for mastery, of marshaling the evidence, of drilling down to bedrock to anchor every claim, of inventing transitions to mask the native jumpiness of my mind.”
