Horace Gray

(1828 - 1902)

Born in Boston, Horace Gray started his long career at the Massachusetts Supreme Court by becoming a court reporter after a failed bid for state attorney general. He slowly worked his way up to chief justice before being nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by Chester A. Arthur. His New York Times obituary noted that he had died of paralysis and that he was six feet, six inches tall.
