Knut Hamsun

(1859 - 1952)

The Norwegian novelist, dramatist, and recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920 Knut Hamsun spent the majority of his impoverished childhood above the Arctic Circle. While apprenticing as a shoemaker, at the age of nineteen he began writing. He published his lyrical first novel at the age of thirty, using his eleven-year struggle to become a writer as its inspiration. He died at the age of ninety-two.
