Tove Ditlevsen

(1917 - 1976)

Tove Ditlevsen grew up in a working-class family in Copenhagen, was married four times, battled drug addiction, and suffered a mental breakdown—all experiences she drew upon for the writing of her novels, short stories, poetry, and memoirs. In the last ten years of her life, she published numerous memoirs, among them Early Spring and Married, before committing suicide at the age of fifty-eight in 1976.
