Idris Ali

(1940 - 2010)

Idris Ali grew up in Aswân and studied at Al-Azhar University in Cairo. His 1993 novel Dongola was the first Nubian novel ever translated into English. When not working as a writer, Ali often had to get construction jobs for money, as he recounts in his autobiographical novel, Below the Poverty Line.
