Ali al-Sistani

Born in Iran to a prominent religious family, Ali al-Sistani moved to Iraq in his twenties to continue his Quranic studies, rising quickly through Shiite clerical ranks. Following the U.S.-led 2003 invasion of Iraq, he became an important political actor, advocating for the establishment of Iraq’s first democratic government.
