Koigi wa Wamwere

Koigi wa Wamwere became a member of Kenya’s Parliament in 1979, representing Nakuru, in the Great Rift Valley. He formed the National Democratic and Human Rights Organization to investigate political violence that had reportedly killed over 1,500 people and displaced more than 300,000 others in the region. “As a Kenyan warrior,” he wrote in his 2002 memoir I Refuse to Die, “I knew that though I might take up gun, spear, and shield, it would not be to raid other communities…It would mean developing the whole country and promoting freedom for all.”
