Ba Bulleh Shah

(1680 - 1757)

A poet who wrote primarily in Punjabi, Ba Bulleh Shah was a Sufi and sought to perceive the truth of God’s unity through direct experience, criticizing the orthodoxy of both devout Hindus and devout Muslims. In one of his devotional songs, or kafis, Bulleh wrote, “Drink a cup of love and you forget all! / God resides in each and every house. / And he permeates every human soul. / Our preceptor dwells within us. / When I fell in love, I realized this.”
