Charles Sprawson

(1941 - 2020)

Born in Pakistan, Charles Sprawson studied at Trinity College, Dublin. He was a dealer in nineteenth-century paintings and swam the Hellespont. His famous study of swimming Haunts of the Black Masseur: The Swimmer as Hero explores the cultural and literary history of swimming, bathing, and the social meanings of water from ancient Greece to the modern Olympics.
