Audre Lorde

(1934 - 1992)

Born in New York City of West Indian parents, Audre Lorde published her first poem in Seventeen magazine while in high school. She became New York State’s poet laureate in 1991 and a year later died at her home on St. Croix. “Lorde,” said Adrienne Rich, “writes as a black woman, a mother, a daughter, a lesbian, a feminist, a visionary.”
