Yasunari Kawabata

Even though Yasunari Kawabata has a reputation as a modernist, the author of Snow Country said he actually focused on traditional Japanese culture. “My own works have been described as works of emptiness,” he said when accepting the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1968, “but it is not to be taken for the nihilism of the West.”
