Elizabeth Hardwick

(1916 - 2007)

Arriving in New York City from Kentucky in 1939, Elizabeth Hardwick wrote of her early years in the city, “Love and alcohol and the clothes on the floor.” She soon became a force in the local literary scene, and during the newspaper strike of 1963 cofounded The New York Review of Books.
