Gerald of Wales

(c. 1146 - c. 1223)

The historian Gerald of Wales received encouragement from his father and uncle to join the Church, which he did in 1175 after receiving his education in Paris. His books The Journey Through Wales, The Topography of Ireland, and his autobiography offer intimate portraits of twelfth-century secular and ecclesiastical life.
