Dante Alighieri

(1265 - 1321)

Dante was in exile, having also been condemned to death by the Florentine government in 1302 for crimes he did not commit, when he began composing The Divine Comedy, perhaps as early as 1308. He completed it in 1321, shortly before his death at the age of fifty-six in Ravenna.
